What you do

Piling operatives work as part of ground engineering teams to install foundations deep into the ground using specialist piling rigs and equipment. Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piling — the most common UK method — uses a hollow-stem auger rotated into the ground while concrete is pumped under pressure through the stem as the auger is withdrawn, creating a continuous concrete column. Bored cast-in-situ piles use a rotary drilling rig to bore a large-diameter hole (300mm–1,500mm) using a bucket, shell, or auger, with steel casing to support unstable ground, before placing a reinforcement cage and pouring concrete. Driven piling uses hydraulic hammers or drop hammers to drive precast concrete, steel H-section, or tube piles to a specified set or depth.

Piling operatives assist the rig operator, manage reinforcement cage placement, monitor concrete delivery and piling records, and maintain the rig and ancillary equipment. Experienced operatives progress to rig operator roles. CPCS A36 (Piling Rig) is the principal licensing category. The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) is the industry trade association and sets standards for pile testing, records, and quality assurance. Piling is essential on brownfield sites, riverside developments, and any project requiring foundations in poor ground conditions.

CPCS licensing creates a portable credential that allows experienced operatives to move between major contractors.

A typical day

Morning: arrive on a residential development site — assist the rig operator in setting up the CFA rig over the first pile position, check the mix design paperwork and concrete delivery for the morning's pour, and assist in placing the reinforcement cage. Afternoon: continue piling the sequence — record bore depths, concrete volumes, and set readings for each pile in the piling record, assist with cage placement for each pile, and clean accumulated spoil from the rig platform. End of day: complete the daily piling record sheet, assist in rig relocation to the next phase position, and carry out the rig's daily maintenance checks.
